Bible Review: KJV Study Bible

King James Study Bible: Second Edition. Thomas Nelson. 2240 pages. [Source: Bought]

Books I've read in the KJV Study Bible: Isaiah, John, Romans, Ephesians, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, Jude, Revelation.

Is it Reformed?!?! Sadly, I'd have to say no. In fact, there were one or two notes that I think would greatly upset Paul!!! (Not to mention what Charles Spurgeon would have to say!)

So I don't agree 100% with each and every note in this study Bible. That being said, do I agree with *some* of the notes at least?! And that would be a YES. I agree strongly with some of the notes; I disagree strongly with some of the notes. You should know that the notes are written from a premillennialist point of view, also probably a dispensationalist one.

The Bible has a lot of features which I do like. A lot of study material is packed into this one. There are articles about various topics throughout this one including: the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, Anointed Offices of Christ, Son of Man, Love of God, Only Begotten, Definition of God, Deity of Christ, The Security of the Believer, Authority of the Scriptures, Union with Christ, Glorification of Christ, Faith, Propitiation, Justification, Penalty of Sin, Adoption, Predestination, Foreknowledge, etc.

One great feature is that it has topical indexes. There is a topical index to Christ and the Gospels. There is a topical index to Paul and His Letters. And in case you want more, there is even a topical index to End Times Prophecy!

Here's an example from the topical index to Paul and His Letters:

Grace
  • A doctrine, by grace we have been saved, Eph. 2:1–10
  • A doctrine, we are no longer under the law but under grace, Rom. 3:24; 5:2–21; 6:1–23; 11:5–7
  • A doctrine, God’s grace is sufficient for Paul in his weakness, 2 Cor. 12:9
  • A doctrine, Hagar and Sarah illustrate law versus grace, Gal. 4:21–31
Here's an example from the topical index to Christ and the Gospels:

Cross/Crucifixion
  • A conversation, Jesus speaks to the thief on the cross beside Him, Luke 23:39–43
  • A conversation, the first time Jesus tells the disciples He must die, Matt. 16:21–28; Mark 8:31—9:1; Luke 9:21–27
  • A conversation, the second time Jesus tells the disciples He must die, Matt. 17:22–23; Mark 9:30–32; Luke 9:44–45
  • A conversation, the third time Jesus tells the disciples He must die, Matt. 20:17–19; Mark 10:32–34; Luke 18:31–34
  • A prophecy, die by crucifixion, Ps. 22:14–17
  • A prophecy, suffer with criminals, Is. 53:12
  • A prophecy, given vinegar and gall, Ps. 69:21
  • A prophecy, soldiers gamble for clothing, Ps. 22:18
  • A prophecy, bones would not be broken, Ex. 12:46
  • A prophecy, die as a sacrifice for sin, Isa. 53:5–12
  • A teaching, Jesus explains why He must die, John 12:20–36
  • A teaching, Jesus showed His love by dying for us on the cross, John 3:14–15; 15:13–14
  • A teaching, we must take up our cross daily, Matt. 10:38; 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23
  • An event, Jesus is crucified and buried, Matt. 27:32–66; Mark 15:21–47; Luke 23:26–56; John 19:17–42
This study Bible is not light on features, articles, and study notes! It is packed with information. I found it to be reader-friendly.
