Book Review: The Christmas Pony

The Christmas Pony. Melody Carlson. 2012. Revell. 170 pages.

I really enjoyed this Christmas-themed novel. In some ways, it is a romance seen through a child's eyes. The heroine, Lucy Turnbull, is living with her mother and grandmother who run a boarding house. She knows that times are hard--it's set in 1937--and that Christmas presents are unlikely, especially since Lucy's dreaming big, a PONY! But she's got a good heart, and she's praying that things will get better. Her mom has specifically asked her to pray that the boarding house will get more guests because they are struggling to make ends meet. So Lucy is THRILLED that she's the one to bring two paying guests home. An oh-so-glamorous woman on her way to California, and the gentleman who rescued her and is giving her a ride in his car. The two appear to be stranded for the holidays, and it may just be the best news ever for Lucy...who sees that her mother and George might have something special...if given enough time to develop.

This is a satisfying read! I love the perspective and the setting. It is more than just a romance. It's a feel-good story that would be a good fit for readers of many ages.
